oBike Gets Even More Cost-Friendly with Lower Rates, Deposits

Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, 3 October 2017 – A revision of rates will soon make commuting by oBike, Malaysia’s first station-less bike-sharing service, even more affordable in the country. It will now cost just RM0.50 for every 30 minutes, down from RM2.00, a 75% reduction. Deposits will also be reduced to RM69 from RM129. Students will enjoy a special deposit rate of just RM29 instead of RM79 previously.

This came after the successful conclusion of the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games (KL2017), in which oBike was the official green initiative partner of KL2017. The initiative saw an encouraging amount of over 60,000kg of carbon emission saved and more than 226,000km travelled, simply by getting athletes, participants and event-goers to cycle to their destinations. The encouraging numbers prompted the bike-sharing operator to lower its rental rates in a bid to entice even more Malaysians to take up cycling.

To encourage responsible riding and parking, oBike rolled out its Credit Scoring system in July. Since the Credit Scoring system came into effect, it has increased and deducted credits according to users’ riding behaviours. Upon registration with oBike, each user will receive 100 oBike Credits. Users with positive riding behaviours can look forward to additional credits which can be used to redeem for rewards in the coming future. Users with less than 60 oBike credits will have to pay more to use the service. To check on their credit status, users can visit the oBike app which clearly states their latest credits.

“Traffic congestion in cities is a very real issue which needs to be addressed urgently. We strongly believe this is where oBike can fill the gap in complementing the existing transportation system, and providing citizens with a viable first-and last-mile commute,” said Ms Elaine Chan, Marketing Manager of oBike Malaysia. “As the market leader in Southeast Asia, we want to ensure that everyone including Malaysians get to benefit and enjoy bike-sharing. As such, we have been in close discussions with the authorities, and an announcement on our upcoming expansion plan will be unveiled soon.” Ms Chan added.
